Sharjah: Mleiha National Park launches ‘Come Closer’ campaign
Shurooq completes fencing project to protect Mleiha National Park’s 34.2 sq km heritage
SHARJAH: Mleiha National Park, a cornerstone of Sharjah’s commitment to preserving its rich historical and ecological heritage, has launched its latest initiative, the ‘Come Closer’ campaign, designed to offer visitors an immersive connection with the region’s deep-rooted history, breathtaking landscapes, and adventure-driven experiences.
Spanning 34.2 square kilometres, the park is one of the UAE’s most significant archaeological and ecological conservation areas, established under an Emiri Decree by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
Managed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), the park has now completed an extensive fencing project in collaboration with the Directorate of Public Works (DPW), reinforcing its dedication to preserving both historical and natural treasures.
The ‘Come Closer’ campaign introduces five distinct themes – ‘Come Closer to History’, ‘Come Closer to Nature’, ‘Come Closer to the Stars’, ‘Come Closer to Culture’, and ‘Come Closer to Adventure’ – offering a multi-faceted journey into the essence of Mleiha’s past and present.
Come Closer to History
Mleiha National Park is home to some of the oldest archaeological sites in the UAE, tracing over 200,000 years of human history. The Mleiha Archaeological Centre, the park’s educational hub, features an extensive collection of prehistoric artefacts, interactive exhibits, and guided tours that bring ancient civilisations to life.
Visitors can explore the Bronze Age Umm an-Nar tombs, view tools used by the region’s earliest inhabitants, and join expert-led ArchaeoMOG tours to iconic locations like Fossil Rock and Jebel Buhais, where Iron Age forts and marine fossils tell the story of a land shaped by time.
“The launch of our ‘Come Closer’ campaign and the completion of the Mleiha National Park fencing project mark a major milestone in our ongoing commitment to preserve and showcase Sharjah’s rich cultural and natural heritage,” said Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, CEO of Shurooq.
Come Closer to Nature
Mleiha’s unique landscape features rolling sand dunes, rugged limestone formations, and vast gravel plains, creating a thriving habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna. The park is home to species such as the Arabian red fox, desert gazelles, and sandfish skink, alongside rare plants like the Arabian primrose and the resilient Ghaf tree.
The park’s Core Conservation Zone, managed in partnership with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), ensures that all activities maintain ecological integrity. Hiking trails lead visitors through fossil-strewn landscapes, while conservation efforts continue to protect endangered species.
Come Closer to the Stars
Mleiha’s remote desert location provides one of the UAE’s best stargazing experiences, thanks to near-zero light pollution. Astronomical tours offer a chance to observe celestial wonders, the same stars that guided traders and nomads centuries ago.
For a deeper connection with the cosmos, Mleiha Glamping provides a luxury camping experience under the stars, complete with BBQ dinners, campfire storytelling, and guided telescope sessions. The initiative aims to blend education with adventure, making the desert night sky an unforgettable highlight.
Come Closer to Culture
Mleiha National Park serves as a bridge between past and present, with a strong emphasis on cultural heritage and community engagement. Plans to introduce a Majlis within the park will allow visitors to engage with local traditions, share stories, and gain insight into the region’s Bedouin history.
Visitors can unwind at Sunset Lounges, where traditional refreshments, BBQ experiences, and panoramic desert views offer a taste of Emirati hospitality. Additionally, the park’s accommodations, including the Moon Retreat and Al Faya Retreat – part of the ‘Sharjah Collection’ – blend luxury with cultural authenticity, offering a serene desert escape.
Come Closer to Adventure
For adventure enthusiasts, Mleiha National Park delivers a range of adrenaline-fuelled activities, from 4x4 desert drives and dune bashing to paragliding and sand surfing. The park is also home to Sky Adventures, the UAE’s first official licensed paragliding centre, offering a bird’s-eye view of the breathtaking desert landscape.
Other popular activities include:
- Horseback riding and buggy tours across the vast terrain
- Guided fossil hikes, where visitors can walk on ancient seabeds
- Camping under the stars, with outdoor experiences tailored for all ages
